Spring through Fall.
The route starts and ends in Westbury, which boasts the only village green in Tasmania, historic Victorian buildings, a hedge maze (now how could you miss that) and the Saint Andrews church which was built between 1836 and 1890 (hey it just wasn’t a speedy process.) And don’t forget Steam World: the largest collection of steam engines in the Southern Hemisphere.
Leaving Westbury you get a well needed warm up through rolling farmlands, what we like to call “undulating with an upward trend”. At mile 12 (Km 19), you begin to climb … climbing through eucalyptus forests with scattered logging and small horse farms. When you make the 90-degree right towards the park, the pitches kick up, up to 20%, but luckily nothing too long. At mile 18 (Km 29) you reach the top of the climb and begin a fantastic descent that showcases a beautiful rainforest and many small creeks.
Don’t you dare skip the hike out to the falls. The vegetation looks like a scene created for a Disney movie, and we promise that you can do the hike in your mountain bike shoes (road shoes, not so much).
Also, take the time to see the “big tree” which is located one min past the bathroom.
From the parking lot make the U-turn and climb back out of the park (it’s not as difficult as you think it will be). Now, it is downhill for a good long way! When you reach a lovely river on your right, the road flattens and the gravel ends (for the day).
Now comes more of the farmland spin .. easy, rolling roads back to the start. You will swear you are deep in the heart of Texas. (“Reminds me of the one I love. Deep in the heart of Texas.”)
Arriving back in Westbury, you can spend time playing tourist. We promise not to tell even if you are a local.
Near the Village Green at the intersection of Lyall street and Lonsdale Promenade. There are public toilets at the city building just east by 100 yards / meters on Lyall street.
We recommend a red blinky light with rear looking radar detector (i.e. Garmin Varia)
