We think the northern part of the Willamette Valley is really under appreciated for the great gravel riding that it has. Most of the riding is west of Highway 47 and north of Highway 18. The terrain is rolling hills with farmlands and woodlands. As you head deeper west, you come into the Coast Mountains and timberlands.

Caution, this is a Development Route. It has not been fully vetted or ridden by the Dirty Freehub Team. Any feedback you have would be much appreciated. You can leave it in the comments below.

When We Like to Ride This

The Willamette Valley area rides most of the year. Winter can be wet, but spring is absolutely beautiful with the flowers, blooming trees, green fields and flowing creeks.

Terrain & Riding

There are few long sustained climbs, but the hills do come with pitch. Seeing your bike computer read out 8% or 10% incline is not uncommon. Overall, we have found the roads to be hard-packed. Sometimes smooth, sometimes with a layer of pea gravel over the top.

Expect some traffic on both the paved and gravel roads. This is just a fact of the route being at the urban-rural interface and Portland being a close, large metro area. Riding with a red blinky light is recommended.

Route Notes

  1. 40 mm tires are a good choice for the terrain. Some riders may be inclined to go narrower.

  2. Recommend a red blinky light. We really like the the units that come with rear looking radar detector. It is really cool to know of cars approaching from behind you without turning around.

  3. Some of the houses have fenced in dogs. We have not been chased in the area, but we recommend carrying some kind of dog repellent.

Route Options

Other rides in the area to consider are:

  • Gaston Gravel / 5 Star
  • Yamhill Loop / 5 Star
  • G-Man / 5 Star
  • McMinnville Mayhem / Development Route
  • Ghost Hill / Development Route
  • Power Hosue / 5 Star

From this collection of routes, you can build routes that are longer and more challenging, but you can also shorten routes to your liking.
