The Willamette Valley area rides most of the year. Winter can be wet, but spring is absolutely beautiful with the flowers, blooming trees, green fields and flowing creeks.
There are few long sustained climbs, but the hills do come with pitch. Seeing your bike computer read out 8% or 10% incline is not uncommon. Overall, we have found the roads to be hard-packed. Sometimes smooth, sometimes with a layer of pea gravel over the top.
Expect some traffic on both the paved and gravel roads. This is just a fact of the route being at the urban-rural interface and Portland being a close, large metro area. Riding with a red blinky light is recommended.

40 mm tires are a good choice for the terrain. Some riders may be inclined to go narrower.
Recommend a red blinky light. We really like the the units that come with rear looking radar detector. It is really cool to know of cars approaching from behind you without turning around.
Some of the houses have fenced in dogs. We have not been chased in the area, but we recommend carrying some kind of dog repellent.
