5 Star Route

This is a 5 Star Route, meaning that it is a highly curated, premier riding route.

This ride is the perfect mix of farm lands and Ponderosa forest. It has sweeping views of the Ochocos … one good, long climb … a meandering traverse with big, green mossy trees … and one of the best gravel descents in Central Oregon

The ride starts and ends in Post, the dead center of Oregon (marked by a post in a field), which is pretty much a small store with a dead animal motif, famous meatloaf sandwiches, and a clientele that is a mix of local cowboys and tourists who are stopping to buy milkshakes, beer, and tshirts.

We love this route … but will warn you that we have been caught by snow and snowed in roads more than once.  So check your elevation levels before you make the drive.

As for the store, they are friendly people … we once helped them pick out a selection of Cliff Bars just for cyclists. And they don’t mind you parking there … but stop in and say a big howdy. And do park at the far end of the parking lot to allow easy access to the livestock trucks that roll through for gas. **Click to Read More

– Date Posted: June 2016 (updated May 2020)

Terrain: The roads are a mix of Forest Service maintained gravel roads and unmaintained dirt roads.

Navigation: There are no difficult to interpret turns, but a missed or wrong turn at the southern leg of the route can make for a very long day.

Locale: Remote. You may encounter some dispersed campers or in the fall hunters.

When we like to ride this …

… late spring to mid summer when the flowers are in bloom and the fields are green or fall when the colors are changing.

The Start

The Post General store, Highway 380, 25 miles south east of Prineville. Park at the far east end of the parking lot. This is a private parking lot, so it is imperative that you get permission from the store management to park there. Also, for the courtesy or parking there, we recommend dropping some coin in the store. Maybe getting one of their shakes, or a meatloaf sandwich, or a ballcap!
