Our preference, is outside of the tourist season when the Avenue of the Giants is quiet. During the winter you may not see anyone on Dyerville Loop Road. However, during the summer tourist season expect to share the road on Avenue of the Giants.
There are two gravel sectors. The first is short (2 miles), but steep. Pitching up to 15%. The second is longer (16 miles). It rolls up and down, but more up than down. 2200 feet of gain, 1400 feet of descent.
At mile 29, you get a 7 mile long descent that drops 2600 feet into the north end of Garberville. The next 10 miles, to Phillipsville, will have more traffic and more urban feeling. Use caution and a blinky red light. To avoid more of US 101 we used Redwood drive and Hooker Creek road. Both more or less parallel US 101. However to access Hooker Creek road you will need to cowboy exit US 101 before the guard rail and drop down onto Hooker Creek road. In about 4 miles you come to Phillipsville, it is all Avenue of the Giants now. Enjoy!!
