The Sagebrush Sea, scientifically known as sagebrush steppe, is the most widespread ecosystem in the United States. Historically, sagebrush covered more than 296 million acres of North America, including most of Wyoming, Montana, and Nevada, as well as parts of Washington, Oregon, Colorado, and Utah.
The scale of habitat loss across the Sagebrush Sea has made it one of the most threatened ecosystems in North America. Sagebrush supports 200 species of wildflowers, 1000 species of insects, bighorn sheep, pronghorn antelope, and the greater sage grouse.
The Oregon Natural Desert Association has created a compelling storyboard on the sagebrush sea in the greater Hart-Sheldon Wildlife Refuge located in southern Oregon and northern California.
The storyboard renders best on computers and tablets, not so well on mobile phones.
