This remote route weaves together pavement and gravel roads to include stunning views of Mt. Thielson and a quick hike to see National Falls. The ride starts with some quick and mellow miles on pavement. At around mile 4.5 there is an optional (but highly recommended) quick turnoff and hike down to see National Falls. The hike to the falls is a quick .7 miles round trip and easily accomplished in cycling shoes. Another mile or so up the road will drop you onto the start of the gravel section of the route and the start of the lion’s share of the climbing on the route, 1800 feet in 8 miles. The climb will wind through fire scarred forests on the way up Minnehaha Ridge with views of one of Oregon’s “Matterhorns,” the beautiful Mt. Thielsen standing at nearly 9200 feet. After topping out, enjoy the 9 mile gravel and pavement descent back to the start.
