This is one of the first, if not the first, published gravel route in The Dalles / Hood River region. It was created by Donny Kolb and originally published on the Velodirt site (no longer an active site on the web). This route “kick-started” the gravel cycling scene in the Columbia River Gorge area. It is more road than gravel and has a bit of traffic on certain segments, but the views are big and worthwhile. The ride is exposed to both sun and wind. However, it is a good early season ride as the elevation never gets above 2500 feet.

Bucky Rides has a very complete and detailed description of the route.

We have classified this route as a Development Route in that it lacks some of the more adventurous elements of gravel cycling that we love, and it has several segments on state highways (~ 20 miles of riding in total). We do not consider this a destination ride, but if we lived in the Hood River / The Dalles area, it would be a go-to route 1 to 2 times per year.

We strongly suggest a red blinky light for this ride. There is food and water at Biggs Junction, about the halfway point.

Caution, this is a Development Route. It has not been fully vetted or ridden by the Dirty Freehub Team. Go prepared and expect a bit more adventure. Any feedback you have would be much appreciated. You can leave it below in the comments block.

When We Like to Ride This

A good early season ride as the elevation never gets above 2500 feet.

Terrain & Riding

This route contains more road than gravel and has a bit of traffic on certain segments, but the views are big and worthwhile. The ride is exposed to both sun and wind. In Summer months this route is doable on a road bike with 28c tyres. Throughout Winter / rainy season it’s best on a gravel/cyclocross bike running 35mm + tires or hardtail mtb.
