Austin is a town we “stumbled” upon as we were transiting to Arizona for some late fall gravel riding. It is a “living ghost town” located at 6600 feet. They have a handful of mountain biking trails and the potential for a couple of gravel routes.

Caution, this is a Development Route. It has not been fully vetted or ridden by the Dirty Freehub Team. Go prepared and expect a bit more adventure. Any feedback you have would be much appreciated. You can leave it below in the comments block.

Terrain & Riding

This is a route that we mapped out and researched further with satellite photography. It has the potential to be quite scenic as a significant portion is in the Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest. We have not ridden the gravel roads, we have driven the paved roads. As mapped, you descend from Austin Summit in both the east and west direction. The start climbs up to Austin Summit from the town of Austin via gravel road and the finish descends from Austin Summit to Austin via the paved road. This mapping should minimize your time and impact to vehicle traffic Highway 50, the “Loneliest Road in America”, a lightly traveled road with limited passing lanes.

The Start

Lat / Long: 39.491588, -117.070088

Along the main street of Austin. Curbside.

Food & Water

  • None.
