Here’s an additional follow-up comment from Andy:
“One thing I wish I’d mentioned in the webinar is how riding in Arizona demands a much higher level of decision-making than riding in a place like Colorado. The route is part of that, and DF and I try to give people resources so they understand, for example, that choosing tires that are too narrow could mean an unexpected hour-long hike-a-bike section they should plan for. That’s the kind of situation behind the comment you shared from the rider who said he “almost died” on a route—ultimately, it often comes down to poor decision-making.
Decision-making also happens moment to moment. Choosing to ride over a tricky feature can have high consequences if you fail, especially when you’re deep in the backcountry. That same choice has much lower consequences at a local mountain-bike park, where you’re surrounded by people and close to town. Even something like deciding to wait patiently for a herd of cattle to move, instead of trying to push through, can carry serious consequences.
I talk about this a lot when I lead introductory gravel rides in Arizona. I’m not sure whether “decision-making in backcountry gravel riding” would make a strong webinar topic by itself—there are so many scenarios to cover (cattle, terrain, preparedness, gear, route choice, weather, clothing, water, etc.).”

Behind every route is scouting, mapping, storytelling, and a whole lot of pedal power.
