Hooray, Hooray!

Riding away from Kerns Rainbow Ranch.…we are coming to Baker City, Oregon to launch our All Access® Eastern Oregon Gravel Guide with a fun party. We have fingers (and toes) crossed for good weather so we can toss in a popup gravel bicycle ride or two … So here’s the full lay of the land.

The PARTY will be hosted at Churchill School which is this crazy place we never can describe.  More fun than a barrel of monkeys.  The venue is a historic elementary school that has been turned into an art school, radio station, barber shop, and a party venue. Brian and Corrine are the most amazing hosts; they are Kool with a capital K.

The party will be Friday night, May 9th, from 5:30 – 8 pm.  Drinks and food will be available for purchase at Churchill.  The first 50 people to arrive will get a free copy of the All Access  Eastern Gravel Guide.  Cyclist and non-cyclists are invited to join in the fun.

At the party, you will get the chance to hear from Kevin and Linda English, Co-Founders of Dirty Freehub about the All Access program, the routes included on the website and in the guide books, and the key reasons why All Access is so important to Dirty Freehub.  But enough gabbing, we will feature a super fun event called, “Explosive Trivia.”  Now before you bike nerds think you are dead ringers to win, the content will be trivia that has been embedded into our Ride Guides.  From beavers to pioneers … from rare plants to historic details … you never know what questions will pop up.

Eastern Guide Book Lodging:  While the Churchill hostel will be booked for the weekend, van campers are wel
come to join us in the Churchill parking lot to huddle around the fire pit, use their facilities and go to our event on Friday night.  (You need to make a reservation at Churchill.  They have ten spots so I wouldn’t dawdle. ). More lodging can be found at Visit Baker County.

If you are van camping at Churchill School, you need to call or text Brian at 541-325-1689. This does not come with power or water hookup. The cost is $25 a night as a donation to Churchill School which is not included in your event registration.

Popup Bike rides on Saturday and Sunday May 10th and 11th:  If the weather is good, join us for a gravel bike ride. We will be riding Saturday and Sunday both.  We will figure out the the routes a week before the event.  But you know we have loads of great curated Ride Guides already posted on our Dirty Freehub website.   (If history is a repeater, we should have lovely weather, according to Brian from Churchill.  He says the last 15 years have been lovely in Baker on this weekend.  So pray to the bike gods that we get more of the same.) ebikes are invited.

Concert night on Saturday night, May 10th:  Consider yourself personally invited to a concert being hosted at Churchill. The Wildwing band is playing center stage. Wildwing shows are a balance of lyrical vocals and lively instrumental selections including Celtic tunes from Ireland, Scotland and Wales.” Amy & Anna are known to “shred” on their dualing violins, while Anna dances & audiences go wild! Local talent Jess Defrees and Dennis Zelmer will open the performance.  You’ll want to purchase tickets from Churchill in advance.

Where is Baker City?  Let us save you the time to look it up … northeast corner of Oregon.

  • Baker to Bend:  4.5 hours of driving
  • Baker to Portland:  4.75 hours of driving
  • Baker to Seattle:  6 hours of driving
  • Baker to Boise: 2 hours of driving

What’s so cool about Baker City? The town is packed with pioneering history and includes a historic downtown area that is the envy of Oregon.  Framed by mountains off in the distance, we love the combination of easy farmland riding to steep hill climbs.  We also love the small town feel but with plenty of options for eating and lodging.

Feel like splurging?  Check out the Geiser Grand Hotel, an acclaimed National Historic Landmark, has been praised by Sunset Magazine as “the finest hotel between Salt Lake and Seattle ” a testament reinforced by the prestigious National Trust for Historic Preservation’s coveted Honor Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation.
